Travel Rage

Any ScienceBunny (TM -ER) who attends a conference today as penance has to do a couple of years with the real auditors.  Eli, for example, just got paid for a trip the Rabett took in December last.  Kate Marvel is doing time in Purgatory

This put Eli in mind of a comment last year by Francis Collins, NIH Director when asked what the most important thing Congress could do to help science

I thought you would write about the mitigation sceptics that are heckling climate scientists on twitter tweeting about a scientific conference because they traveled to be able to talk to each other.

Oh I thought it was this

A wonderful little story

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/sep/20/french-hitchhiker-goes-beserk-new-zealand-four-days-stuck-without-a-lift

"A Frenchman has gone on a frustrated rampage in a tiny New Zealand fishing village after he spent four days waiting for a hitchhiking ride.

The 27-year-old Frenchman arrived in the west coast settlement of Punakaiki, home to just 70-full-time residents, late last week.

According to New Zealand police the man spent four days attempting to hitchhike south.

On the fourth day after no one had picked him up he went “berserk”, allegedly attacking the Welcome to Punakaiki sign with a rock, abusing motorists and throwing other road signs into the local river."

Scrutiny does seem to be increasing-- requests for further explanation of various costs (including erroneous invocations of rules applying to different cases) have gone from a rate near zero to 'nearly every claim'.

But sometimes bureaucracy can help:

“B.J.H. would also like to thank the U.S. Immigration Service under the Bush administration, whose visa background security check forced her to spend two months (following an international conference) in a third country, free of routine obligations—it was during this time that the hypothesis presented herein was initially conjectured.”
